MUSIC VIDEO PRESENTATION - SCRIPT

CARRIED AWAY - NARRATIVE MUSIC VIDEO

  • Carried away in a narrative music video, whereby we are shown the ups and downs of a relationship and their struggle. It's quite informative in terms of that although they portray their emotions through body language they still have subtitles shown between the instrumentals which is quite unconventional for your average video. Usually bands such as fall out boy, blink 182 would completely stop the music so there's a mute for the characters to have an actual conversation.
  • The concept of the video is an absolute contrast to what you would assume their interpretation to be. At first when we hear the lyrics "Listen, I'm your friend (don't quote me) But not a friend worth noting Yes, please don't ever note me as your friend" at first we assume it's a song about friendship and the boy is attempting to turn it into something more... But once we see the video we are actually shown that it's a video based around the good bits and the bad bits of a relationship.
  • The video and how it portrays the artist itself, this is mostly done by the lyrics of the video but then again through how the band themselves have filmed the video. It in a way has different aspects which could reflect on each band member themselves in terms of their own personal experience.
  • In terms of editing that has been done the director has somewhat made use of a variety of camera angles, yet at the same time allow the video to look professional. There is a slight use of lip synch and miming but it has been done in a manner whereby it isn't obvious. As if he is just speaking and having a normal conversation instead of actually facing the camera and making it obvious that he is in fact being filmed.
SLEEPYHEAD - IN LIVE/ CONCEPT VIDEO
  • For this particular song there are two music videos. One is portrayed as a 'live' music video whereby it starts off with fans screaming and the music is not high quality. The first 15 seconds of the video is live music, after wards it is complete studio.
  • The band played live at 'The Warfield SF' The second music video is more of an animation type. Whereby everything has been animated besides the lead singers face. Both music videos compliments the song, however in terms of conventions I would say their 'live' version would be better. This being because the live version shows a more 'open' and vibrant vibe to the song in comparison to the other.
  • The song itself is quite an upbeat/ happy song therefore the video should be the enforcer of this. In terms of the conventions that they have used, they have given focus to the main singer yet also had the rest of the band members within the video; showing how happy they were etc.
  • The song also contains samples of "Óró Mo Bháidín" by Mary O'Hara who is an Irish opera singer and "San Francisco Scene (The Beat Generation)" by Jack Kerouac.
  • The video also uses 'lighting for mood' this is where the director is able to manipulate the light to his advantage. In terms of this video it has been used well to show happiness and life which is the purpose of the song.
  • The live video, has cleverly used the simple 'fade away' but very subtle in the beginning of the actual music video, whereby we are giving the introduction to the song. Which at the same time shows us the lead singer.
IN REELING - IMPRESSIONIST/ SPECIAL AFFECTS
  • Generally well received by music critics, the single entered the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in September 2009. Within the UK, the single originally peaked at #137, but was re-issued in January 2010, where it performed slightly better at #99.
  • With it's improved showing, the record company then re-issued "Sleepyhead" in March 2010.
  • And a music video for the song premièred in April 2009.
  • A remixed version of "The Reeling" was used on the trailer for the fourth season of Skins.
  • The concept of the music video was "a carefree night on the town" which is shown throughout the video with special effects such as ripped paper 'special affects'
  • The song also features background vocals from the likes of the ps22 chorus.
  • The PS22 Chorus is an elementary school chorus from Public School 22 in Graniteville, Staten Island (New York). It is composed of 60-70 fifth-graders, and is directed by Gregg Breinberg. Therefore the song itself doesn't have the chorus members within the video, but they have been added within the song.
  • As mentioned before the video itself is quite a big contrast in comparison to the previous ones viewed therefore I think it really stands out.
  • The techniques used in terms of editing would be quite simple, fade and cut away's, and a minimum range of camera angles.
