Radio Advertisement Comparison

Within this report, I will be analysing two radio advertisements. The two adverts that I have chosen are the 'Coca Cola - Summer Sound Radio Ad' and 'Dogs Trust' These two adverts completely contrast one another in terms of the audience that each are aimed towards.

Coca Cola is a company based around a soft drink, which is distributed globally and well known amongst many. The advert bases around an individual having a conversation with "thirst" whereby he plays 'thirst' a variety of sound effects to see if he can handle them. The sound effects are used to portray different scenes e.g. the sound of seagulls, which makes the audience, think of a beach. Which was the adverts aim... However at the end of the advert he uses the sound of a beverage being opened. In which "thirst" is tricked into thinking it is a sound affect when in reality it was not. This is shown to the audience by the conversation he has with "thirst"; "Ha! Got you there thirst that wasn't sound affects, that was a coke." whereby "thirst" retorts with: I'm no longer thirsty. As we can see that the conversation between "thirst" and our person flows very well so to speak that it sounds as if he is speaking to another person. When actually, he is speaking to his own thirst. This type of conversational tone helps promote the item by showing the consumer that a coke is a drink that can be drunk in any given situation. The aim of the advert is very clear as any listener would be able to guess the aim of the actual advert, which is any companies aim to promote the actual object. In this case, Coca Cola have done this in a unique way by using an actual sense as their pinpoint. The style of the advert as a whole is based on entertainment with a slight comical feel given to it. This being because he is informative, yet able to capture the listener by the conversation he is having with his thirst. The way that the advert ends is with their slogan "Coca Cola, open happiness" which is self-explanatory in a sense that they believe their drink will make you happy and that is no way that you could not enjoy it. The advert is a one off as it bases around a singular object; that being "thirst" and the actual drink.

In comparison to previous advertisements which Coca Cola have created they have usually been based around drinking the beverage which will essentially make the consumer happy which is in actual fact their slogan. "Coca Cola, Open happiness" The way in which the company has advertised this has been done through a variety of mediums, radio, T.V, imagery etc. Promoting this concept that if you are to drink their beverage it will bring you happiness.  In terms of how the company advertises their product, is very interesting and unique. This being because they not only advertise their actual drink, but this concept/ idea of being happy. As stated before they believe that their drink will bring happiness to anyone who consumes it.

"In March 2013, Coca-Cola set out to break down barriers and create a simple moment of connection between two nations -- India and Pakistan."

This particular project named 'Small World Machines' allowed Coca Cola to not only promote their beverage but also allow their company to be seen in a brighter light as helping individuals throughout the world. As said in their own words, Coca Cola described the project in their own words below:

"The initiative "Small World Machines" provided a live communications portal between people in India and Pakistan and showed that what unites us is stronger than what sets us apart. The key to engaging with each other through the machines was simple: people in India and Pakistan could complete a task, like touching hands, drawing peace, love, and happiness symbols -- together."

Coca Cola, usually base their ideas/ concepts of advertising around one idea. E.g. the 'Summer' advert had been created based around the idea of being thirsty due to it being the season of 'summer' therefore they took advantage of this thus creating the advert. In terms of other means, they have also created adverts based around winter, but more importantly the celebration of 'Christmas' this again is another advertisement which was created for T.V advertising but nonetheless is still one of Coca Cola's most popular ads. In terms of the reasoning behind the creation of the advert again, they have based the concept of their advertisement on one convention in this case; Christmas. Coca Cola are able to take full advantage of this particular season, due to the colours of their company being 'Red and White' which is what we as a society relate 'Santa Clause/ Father Christmas' too. Therefore when creating the advertisement it was fairly easy for them to get the conventions of their advert correct.

The target audience, which Coca Cola are aiming for through this, advert; would be those who enjoy a good beverage as well as company. Due to this the age group, which is aimed towards this advert, would be teens from the age of 15 and upward.  The implication of the advert being aimed towards, this target audience would be due to the slogan and chosen script. The script, bases around as mentioned before a male speaking to his thirst therefore through this we could connect this particular situation to a young teen that is thirsty and fancies a drink. The place, in which the teen could hear this advert and the idea could influence him to buy a Coca Cola, could be whilst in a car journey or just whilst running errands in a shopping mall etc. The slogan “Coca Cola, open happiness” allows the listener to believe that once this drink is drunk it will indeed make them happy and puts across that the drink is the source to your mood changing… Then again it can be considered that the slogan could be based around the sugars within the drink, which could make the individual who drinks it “hyper” hence the slogan ‘open happiness’ the happiness within you? Maybe.

In terms of advertising for a beverage in general, many companies do also use the concept of 'thirst' and in the attempts of influencing the consumer to by their product use their actual drink to win them over. Again which is done so with 'Sprite' through again, a T.V advertisement but that idea of 'thirst' being used to win over you, the consumer. The quote used at the end 'Freedom from Thirst' again enforcing this concept that YOU buying their product will free you from the thirst you feel.

Dogs Trust, is an animal welfare charity and humane society in the United Kingdom, which specialises in the well being of dogs. The charity rehabilitates and finds new homes for dogs, which have been abandoned or given up by their owners. The charity runs throughout the United Kingdom so in terms of advertising and the level distribution it would only be limited within the U.K. The advert that Dogs Trust have created is one that basically promotes their company but not the actual company but what it holds. In this case, the object would be 'dogs'. It starts with a number of people calling out names, which we can claim as the names of their dogs; the voice and the way that they call out their dogs names is with love and happiness. Thus implying it isn't a formal advertisement... However going more into more content of the advert; it informs the listener of where it is they got these dogs from by stating "Over 3,000 people have found their best friend at Dogs Trust" which can either solve the individuals problem or just inform them of where to go if looking for a dog. Which then shows a more formal tone it always shows a multi- voice dialogue ranging from the names being called in the beginning to the two main characters speaking. The message of the advert is the charity trying to get the consumer to adopt a dog so that they both can feel the love and adoration of a dog hence the usage of "best friend". Moving on in the advert, we are introduced to 'Sandra' who is an employee at 'Dogs Trust Dublin' who informs us of the types of dogs that they look after at the centre from puppies to golden retrievers. The advert uses persuasive techniques not only through Sandra, but also with the explanation of the dogs "Every dogs trust dog is fully vet checked, neutered, and micro chipped" This showing the audience that the actual owners know exactly what is expected of them and what it is that the audience looks for when adopting a dog. The usage of "best friend" is used twice within the radio advert, due to it being a common saying "dog is a mans best friend" which is why I think that the usage of 'best friend' has been repeated. The advert is indeed a one- off advert in that there will be more adverts promoting the charity but this is one of a kind.

In comparison to other advertisements which 'Dogs Trust' have created they have again like 'Coca Cola's' been based around a particular feeling or in this case 'having/ persuading' this again like Coca Cola's advert has been done through the usage of script however whereas Coca Cola would base their script around a season or sense Dogs Trust's advertisement constantly base around this idea of 'Dogs being a mans best friend' but also the reverse psychology of informing the audience of the negativity which takes place towards the dogs. Not only this but usually within 'T.V Advertising' for the company they base their advertisement on a perspective aspect this meaning that we are usually given the perspective of the dog. Whereby he/ she explains how they are treated and what dogs trust do for them and other dogs; this however has been done through 'T.V' advertising, however can be done through radio so long as everything is labelled within script etc.

The target audience which this dogs trust radio commercial aims towards are all types of people, this being stated all types of ages and ethnicities whom like dogs. In terms of age range it can influence a young child as they may hear the advert and want one of their own, therefore try to manipulate their parents/ careers. In terms of someone in their late 20’s and upward it could give them valid points as to why they should adopt a dog and how. Therefore this advert aims towards a whole variety of people those who want to adopt a dog, but was unaware as to where they could have been targeted. Those who were considering the option, yet did not have any valid reasons as to why have also been targeted… Then with the usage of the term “best-friend” a single child could also be aimed as life a only child can be lonely.

Coca Cola and Dogs Trust are both trying to promote their actual object and even although they are completely different as one is based upon a beverage whereas the other on a dog however there is still significance. In terms of the persuasive techniques used within both adverts, there are similarities. One major one would be the usage of a 'multi-voice' the multi-voice has been used within the Coca Cola advert to show a conversation, whereas multi-voice has been used within the 'Dogs Trust' advert as each individual having an input to the advert. In terms of the audience, Coca Cola aims for anyone and those who are fans of "happiness, fun and fizzy drinks" in comparison to Dogs Trust, their target audience would be previous dog owners or ones who want to be.

In conclusion, both companies are trying to promote their object. They have both gone in unique ways to do so, yet they have both used 'multi-voice' however in terms of the way that they have used it they contrast; which just goes to show that although they are both promoting both adverts have their own unique style.

Eurogamer Advert Ft Damilola

During class a peer and I created a radio advertisement for the event "Eurogamer" within the advert we explained what it is, where it is, and what the event will contain; allowing the listeners to actually know what it is we are talking about which will initially influence them to come down. Within the advert we not only created one jingle but two. We begin the advert with "Eurogamer, the place where you can be yourself or someone else" and at the end another "Eurogamer live the game, don't play it" We added these two jingles because we really wanted the advert to appeal to those who actually enjoy gaming. When playing games, most gamers do actually have their own concept and way in playing it. Therefore the jingles that we created both implement/ express the views of an actual gamer hence why we thought it would be a good idea to add them in.

Heroes Journey

Aloha, so in class we had to create a story board based around a hero or a heroine. In terms of the game my group and I created was based around (Chris) who is on the hunt for his first love 'Lauren' who has been kidnapped. Chris, is informed by Lauren's mother is aware that Chris is still in love with Lauren, so she thinks it would only be best if he is aware by her rather than anyone else. Chris then takes it upon himself to find Lauren and save her. Below, are the last scenes of which we assume on how the game will end.

The first picture would be the equilibrium whereby he is faced by the actual kidnapper and he must kill him so that he is no longer a problem.

The 'Reward' would then be that Chris has found Lauren

Chris, then leads Lauren to the way out of the cave to safety.

Lauren, is then taken home back to her worrying mother.

Music Video Workshop

In our second workshop for creation of music video, we were given a camera and told to re-create six iconic scenes from the video and make the video our own. Below I have embedded both the original and our take on it.

When creating our take on the original music video, we had to work with our surroundings and the objects we had because of this the video looks quite amateur, however with our chosen concept we made it work. In terms of the editing, we (dami, wallace, eddi) wanted it to be as sleek as possible in terms of the transactions and the objects used. Our main 'props' used within the video would be the CD, and a Skateboard. The reason behind, the CD was the main characters base whereby he hands out his music to passer-bys so he became our main character (wallace) We then had your every day "not interested" person who is constantly in a rush who didn't even have time to look at Wallace. This being (dami) which gives the audience that 'real feel' to the video. Filming in different locations, was quite tricky as we were limited to our college however we were able to find two unique spots which didn't look as if we were in college but more like a park. A perfect example of this would be the scene, that we are introduced to eddi. Eddi, is our skateboarder who has no specific role within the video but again to give the video it's authenticy as it has been used in the original.

This is the original

This is our creation

In conclusion, I think the filming of the video went quite well and the concept did come together when all clips had been edited together.

Creation of Radio, Explanation.

During this week, we were given the task to create two radio adverts. Within this post I will be explaining and showing how it is Eddi and I managed to do so. I will be explaining how it is that we created our first radio advert, which you can find here: Freshers Fair Ad

The first thing that me and Eddi set our heads to was, what we wanted to put in the ad. In terms of the script, we were given a flyer informing us of the actual events that would take place at the fair; therefore from this information we created a script which informed the audience of what the fair is and what they would find at the fair. At the end of the advert, we added a jingle which we created ourselves too. "Freshers fair, for the time you have spare"

In terms of the technology that we used to record our voices we used a Phillips, voice recorder which you can see below. It allowed us to record the voice over for our radio advert clearly.
Uploading the audio to reaper -
When uploading the audio to the application all we had to do was drag it on. As you can see on the audio there are quite a few 'empty' spaces where there is no speech taking place and it's just extended mute.

Editing the audio, removing the unneeded blanks -
In terms of the original audio, due to their being too many 'blanks' within the audio when we paused the recording and carried on, we had to edit the audio so that the audio flowed with no pauses. As you can see, it has also reduced in size.

Adding a music bed with the audio of me and Eddi speaking; also adding a fade to the music-
After, we finished editing our vocal audio we then added a music bed. The song we chose to go beneath our audio is "Disclosure ft Aluna George - White Noise" we chose this song because it was quite a long intro therefore when being used in the beginning none of the vocals from the song interacted or buzzed out mine and Eddi's vocals.

We also added a fade at the end of the music bed, so that the jingle that we created could be heard over the music.

Radio Advert 2

Our second attempt of a radio advert, however for this one we recreated an original advert. The original advert was for a soft drink named 'Kick Citrus Soda' which you can listen to below. We did stick to the product in terms of the recreation but we changed the script and added two music beds as well as sound affects. In terms of the planning we searched for adverts that we would want to recreate, we set out with the aim of recreating an advert whereby we could mix a comedy sense to it. We came across this advert which never did actually make it to the radio. Which doesn't make any sense, as it is quite a humorous one. None of the less, after hearing the ad we took it upon our selves to recreate the script but to say it in the same manner that it was spoken originally. With a few sound affects and two music beds, I give you our recreation of the 'Kick Citrus Soda' radio advert.

Article on Computer Games

What are computer games? Computer games can be defined as games that you play on an computer. These games vary as they are divided and sorted by genres. These genres include Adventure, Platform, Strategy, Fighting, Simulation, Racing, Arcade, Action, Music, Role-Play,Sports and Hybrid. Much like music, genre is basically a group in which an object or person is placed in due to them having similar characteristics.

Games would be nothing without their back story however a game would be nothing if the story was told in your general 'oral tradition' The main reason behind story telling would be to get a point across or so that the individuals listening to the story learn something. Much like fables, which are short stories which often include animals that often teach you a moral lesson; and is usually told to young children. Although there are a variety of ways in which a story can be told in this article I will be informing you of all the different types of story telling and will be backing my point in terms of how important the structure is for certain games.

The reason behind a game being put into a genre is due to the games story; for example the game 'Skyrim' would be a hybrid of both RPG and action. RPG is basically a 'Role Play Game' which means that the person playing the game has basically taken on the role of the character he or she is playing and must go on an adventure. Within the game you are able to take on the form of a mythical creature or a human depending on the players choice. Skyrim is basically a game which transports the player to a completely different dimension. Allowing, the player to not only enjoy the game but to also feel as though it is their actual reality. The game focuses on the players ability to defeat 'Alduin' a dragon who's main goal is to destroy the world. Skyrim is set back 200 years ago after Oblivion, within the fictional world of Skyrim too. The game carries the open world tradition in which the player is able to travel anywhere within the game at any time; and to put off the main story line indefinitely. This being because the player must gain their characters skills, which are "numerical representations of certain abilities" As you can see that the game itself as you go along informs you of what to do next, or what it is that is expected of you. The game in terms of it's story is a legend type of story, this being because it is based 200 years ago and within the game you also have other characters who inform you of the past. Not only this but because Legends are a historical story that is usually used to show
human characteristics; such as bravery, courage, honesty, love, pain etc. 'King Arthur' is someone who shows all these characteristics. Due to these stories being based on real life people the stories are never fictional, however in the case of the game it is usually told in a Legend manner of that within the game it is not actually fictional but reality. Also, because if the game was based around a fable it would reduce the game to only be short lived. Like the game Tekken. Legends have also been passed on throughout generations as more or less most stories are; they may have been changed over time due to fit the generations needs/ understanding but none of the less a legend, is a story.

Another form of story telling would be a Fable, as mentioned before fables are in fact short stories and because of this they are most commonly used within action and 'beat em up' style games. A perfect example of a fable being used within this type of game would be the well known 'Tekken'. Tekken is a game whereby the whole concept revolves around violence, it begins by informing the player what it is that's expected of them; also a brief introduction to each character. Their are a variety of characters which the player can choose from, and within each character they each have their own personal story. The game fixates on the 'King of Iron Fist Tournament', hosted by the Mishima Zaibatsu corporation. The 'King of Iron First Tournament' is basically a fighting competition whereby people come together to battle one another in the attempt to win the prize. The big prize in which all the characters are completely blood thirsty over is control over "Mishima Zaibatsu Company" as well as being able to host the next Tournament. 'Mishima Zaibatsu corporation' translated is actually "Mishima Financial Group" The company is a giant multinational conglomerate within the Tekken universe hence why so many take part within the tournaments. This particular game is most similar to a fable due to it not lasting very long, nor is it that difficult to understand.

Cave paintings are one of the earliest forms of story telling this being because they were easy to tell in a time of no languages. The way in which they were told were by pictures being drawn/ painted on the wall of caves. The whole concept of cave paintings in those times were usually created to entertain by entailing stories, others warnings or even just for the individuals to remember memories. Sort of like taking a picture, or writing a diary.

In terms of cave paintings due to it all being based around imagery and drawings most games which can be considered to be of a cave drawing narrative would be games which are pretty simple to follow; so games like chess or checkers. Which you can now play "online" in general puzzle games, are quite basic so they can be considered as to have a cave painting narrative. One game in particular would be 'Tetris' the game basically starts without the help of the actual player, testing his/ her brain. Another game which also has the influence of text story telling would be the game '4 pics 1 word' within this game what you have to do is guess the word only by viewing four pictures; which are the clues. You are also given a number of letters, which you will have to use to guess the word. Hence the title '4 pics 1 word'

Whereas for legends it has the origin of oral tradition where it is spoken however in time it has adapted and now been written and recorded for others to hear. In terms of games being influenced by the legend narrative Skyrim would be one but many others such as world of war craft and Legend of Zelda. These are all legend narrative games because, in the beginning of the game we are given an introduction to the game and the back story which is in fact a cut scene. Where we are informed and shown something that is significant to the game; whereby the controller has no control over. Not only this but within the game each level that you obtain you are again told another part of the story which sometimes can also be a clue for your next level. Another example of the legend storytelling form would be world of warcraft; within this game you are basically a mythical creature or a warlock where you must go on adventures and tasks to proceed in the game.

In conclusion, the two narrative types of story telling are two which are unique in their own terms. Cave paintings are usually known to be quite short and snappy,  whereas legends are long and detailed however in terms of the content legends can also have pictures similar to cave paintings depending on the decade of the legend; however can still be created due to them being stories which will continuously be passed down to generations.

Radio Advertisement - Practice 1

Recently we started studying radio advertisements,  the task was to create a radio advert for our college's freshers fair. Firstly we brainstormed what it is and how we wanted to do our radio advert; writing our script and deciding if we wanted a music bed or not. We had to create the advert so that students would want to come to the fair. Therefore the advertisement includes the good points about the fair and what would be at the fair. We also added a little jingle that we made up ourselves "Freshers fair, for the time you have spare" Freshers fair is basically a fair which you attend to sign up for clubs ranging from sport, social and even educational.

Music Video Workshop 1

Aloha, today in class our aim was to shoot clips for a music video that we will be editing together to form one. Our chosen song was 'Around the world - Daft Punk' we chose this song as we had limited time and because the song has little lyrics in it the video concept could be simple yet effective. These are a few shots of how our filming went.

Walk through of our idea -

This was basically a walk through of what it is that we wanted to do for the video as a whole, where we wanted to shoot. Where we would place certain things and the placement of the characters.

Close up of Eddi and Chaq
This shot was used to show that the main character; Chaq has lost his hat and he is confused at to where it could have gone. A close up of him patting his head etc to show that he is completely unaware as to where it could have gone.

Over the shoulder of Eddi and Chaq but also a head on shot of Chaq.
This shot was used to show Chaq and Eddi walking down the stair case and Chaq still lost as ever wondering where he put his hat. Until he finds his hat, and the happiness shines through by his dancing. The over the shoulder shot was used to show that Eddi and Chaq are unaware that someone is recording them. Also, so we as an audience can see what is actually running through his mind.

Pan upwards of both Eddi and Chaq
The pan upwards was used as an introduction to the music video, to show the two main characters. Eddi and Chaq.

Pan of the stairs
The pan of stairs was also, used as the introduction. When edited together, it would be connected to the pan upwards of both Eddi and Chaq.

My group consisted of both Eddi and Chaq, make sure you go check their blogs out too!

Music Video

Aloha, and salutations! It's me again, aha.

Today, I will be posting about a particular music video which me and my fellow partners had to analyse and present to my class mates. The music video that we chose was 'Duke Demont feat A*M*E - Need U 100%' directed by Ian Robertson. In terms of the content of the music video it's completely different from anything I have seen. It beats the conventions of your stereotypical video, firstly because neither the artist or producer is in the song; showing that their main focus is too promote the song and the feel that the audience my receive from it. Which is also shown throughout the video. My main reason for why it beats main conventions is because for some it's quite an explicit video in terms of the main focus... The video revolves around a young male who has a tape player inside him which constantly plays this one song (Need U 100%) repeatedly. The whole aim of the video is to show that he has had enough of it, because all it ever does is draw attention to himself; he is unable to do every day things without someone dancing near him or being intrigued as to where the song is coming from. This is shown by the camera shots; within the video the main shot used is a wide shot/ establishing shot mainly so that the viewers can see the reaction to the song and in the hopes that they also feel the same when they hear this song. There are a few close ups, but that is mainly to show the frustration felt by the main character.

My personal opinion on this video is that, it's unique and ever so smart. It's refreshing to see a video, based on the song and the responses of it. Also the way in which they promoted the video did indeed put a smile of my face; as it completely revolved around the way in which the song should make you feel. Music in general should make you feel something ANYTHING. I thoroughly enjoy both the song and video. In retrospect I think that Ian's idea was very inspired, and the artist's choice of director interesting yet respectable. Ian is mostly known for his grime video 'lyrical spread' which again I found to be amazing just because of the idea and how he even managed to film it.

Computer Game

Aloha, so this is my second post informing you all of my first gaming experience. The first computer game, I recall playing was Crash Bandicoot it was not only my first played game but it's also one of my favourites the reason being is because it's adventure based but then it has that influence of action mixed within it; which makes me enjoy it even more. The graphics aren't that great, but it never really bothered me. It gave the game, it's authenticity. That's it is in fact an old game, but it was indeed a great game. As you can see below are actual pictures of the 'menu' and a trailer for the game itself. My favourite thing about the game was the music that they used, and how it would change to suit the situation that you were facing. Not only this but because it was adventure with a hint of action, it mainly reminded me of the 'Tasmanian Daredevil' because of the famous move he had which Crash also has.

Well that's me, and I hope you enjoyed my second post. Plenty more on the way!

Aloha, and salutations to you all for this is my new blog and I welcome you all!

I welcome you all to my new blog on this blog I will be creating my portfolio for media, and you lovely followers will be able to see my grow and blossom into a more knowledgable student in terms of media and the gaming industry. I am currently studying AS Film studies as well as this B-TEC Level Three Media course... Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Lareb Naseem, I am seventeen years young and have quite an absurd love for photography and music. A fun fact about me is that when I was sixteen, I had a bike accident which led to me falling unconscious. When I awoke the first thing I did was tell a joke to my paramedics. The joke was my own creation so you can already imagine the embarrassment. The Joke was;

"Knock Knock
Who's there?
Barbie.
Barbie who?
Barbecue"
.
.
.

THE ONE THING THAT REALLY ANNOYED ME, WAS THAT MY PARAMEDICS WERE ENCOURAGING THIS EMBARRASSMENT. LIKE, WHY? Ah, what made it worse is that once I reached full consciousness I had no memory of telling this joke. So I could have carried on with my life aha but no. I couldn't even deny that I did this, because it's just the raw fact that it was a joke I remember creating in my head. Sigh.

Well that's me and I hope you enjoyed my first post.
